Can a tablet of Metoprolol be taken only when high blood pressure is felt?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am using Metoprolol 50 mg. Early today I felt I am having high blood pressure and after that, I took a Metoprolol. Is it fine to take Metoprolol during my high blood pressure? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You mentioned that you felt like having high blood pressure, have you been diagnosed with blood pressure? If yes, how long back? Do you take Metoprolol daily or only when you feel like you are having high blood pressure? Though it is fine if you take Metoprolol for high blood pressure, the dose should be set for daily intake and titrated to the required dose based on your measured blood pressure levels. Kindly follow up with the measured blood pressure levels. The drug should be taken on a daily basis depending on your blood pressure levels but not depending on the feeling of having blood pressure.

Thank you.
