How to treat hyperpigmentation caused by acne scars?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My question is that must you apply a moisturizer before a sunblock that ALSO claims to provide moisture? And what ingredients should one look for to treat hyperpigmentation due to acne scars? And in what sort of products like a vitamin C Serum or a Vitamin C Cream? And how does one reduce the appearance of pores around the nose? I am 18 years old. Should I still exfoliate once every week?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If you have very dry skin you can apply a noncomedogenic moisturiser before applying a sunscreen, or if you have oily skin, there is no need, sunscreen will suffice. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going outside, for maximum benefit. To treat hyperpigmentation caused after healing of acne lesions, you can use cream containing Azelaic acid 15% or arbutin, licorice extract or mulberry extract. Vitamin C serum is also a good skin product to get even skin tone and glow, you can apply it during night time after washing your face, and before using moisturiser. To reduce pores , you can use clay mask, natural remedies like aloe vera, cucumber juice. You can exfoliate once a week. Always remove make up before going to bed. Yes you can exfoliate your face once in a week. If you have any other questions, please let me know. Thanks.
