How is a 54-year-old patient with Huntington's chorea treated?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father, aged 54 years, is suffering from Huntington's chorea. The symptoms from the past eight years, like involuntary movements, struggling to swallow, balancing problems, severe cold, and cough, were visible, but we felt it was quite common; the days passed, and the symptoms became more prominent. My father's elder sister also had HD chorea. She passed away due to depression. So we started consulting a doctor; from ayurvedic to scientific, we have tried in all ways, but doctors say there is no proper treatment for this disorder. He is continuously on medication, but it is of no use. He is becoming weak day by day though we are giving him health supplements to make him strong and strengthen his body. I am taking Petril, Amantrel, Evion, Parkin, and BP tablets. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

No treatments can alter the course of Huntington's disease. But medications can lessen some symptoms of movement and psychiatric disorders. Multiple interventions can help a person adapt to changes in their abilities for a specific time. Psychotherapy, speech, occupational, and physical therapy may be helpful. There are many drugs for this problem, but they are not much beneficial.

Please consult your neuro physician. He will examine and treat you accordingly.

I hope you find it helpful.

Regards.
