Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My son has been coughing non-stop for days, and now he has fever and seems tired. The doctor mentioned something about human metapneumovirus (HMPV), but we have never heard of it before. Is it like a cold, or is it more serious? Does it affect kids worse than adults? How long does it take to recover from this, and is there anything I can do to help him feel better faster? He is missing school, and we are worried.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus, this viral infection causes chest infection which leads to cough, and pneumonia-like symptoms. But it is not common in any other countries other than China. Few cases have been seen in China, so if you are not from China and did not travel recently then do not worry about it.
It does affect children more than adults because children have less immunity. Apart from that, it takes two weeks to get healed. It can lead to difficulties in breathing if it is not treated.
Provide the following information:
Do you have a travel history?
What medicine are you giving him currently?
How old is your son?
Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take proper guidance.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
