Is it fine to combine allopathy medicines with homeopathy medicines?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I want to know whether I can combine my depression, anxiety, and insomnia medications with homeopathy.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You can take medication combined with homeopathy if you are not taking it for mental illness. You should take psychiatry medication under your psychiatrist's prescription. You should also follow the below guidelines to deal with your problem.

  1. You should exercise 30 to 45 minutes daily, like at least going for a walk.
  2. Try doing meditation for 20 minutes daily. Just sit in one place in a comfortable position and try to concentrate on your normal breathing, do not stop or force yourself to stop your thoughts. Just let it be.
  3. Start eating healthy home-cooked foods, and avoid junk foods.
  4. Drink a lot of water.
  5. Spend some quality time with friends and family daily or do video calls if you are living away from your family.
  6. You can also spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills, language, or musical instruments.
  7. Get good sleep of seven to eight hours daily.
  8. Avoid the consumption of tobacco, alcohol, or any other substance.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, thank you. I want to ask, will I be able to get off antidepressants when I start to use homeopathy for a while?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is not important which type of medications you are taking. The important part is to treat your depression. If you are stable without medications, you do not need antidepressants or homeopathy. It is like diabetes. If a patient with diabetes can control sugar, then the patient does not need medication. If he cannot control it, he needs medications to control his sugar levels. And still, he is not able to control it so he needs the support of insulin. So the basic point is that he needs to control his sugar. In the same way, if you can control your thoughts or stress, you do not need allopathy or homeopathy medicines. You must take at least six months of your medication before tapering off.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I am not stable. I use medications for depression, anxiety, and insomnia. I want to ask, when should I start with homeopathy? Will I be better? And for a while, if homeopathy works, will I be able to live without antidepressants? Can homeopathy treat all these conditions? Does it cause any side effects if I use them both?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am sorry that homeopathy is not so effective if you have a chronic and long history of depression. I am an allopathic doctor, but I have seen many patients who tried homeopathy but then returned to allopathic as they were not stable on homeopathy. Still, if you want to try, then you must try homeopathy. But you should not take both medications. Otherwise, how will you know which one is effective? You should taper off your allopathic then you should start homeopathic medications. You must not suddenly stop your allopathic medication. Otherwise, you will have withdrawal symptoms if you take it for a long time. You need to ask the homeopathic doctor for its course and duration. I am not able to answer it. Can you tell me the name of your current antidepressant medications, doses, and duration?

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Currently, I am taking tablet Clonazepam and tablet Phenothiazines. I have been taking them for over one and a half years.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Tablet Clonazepam is an antianxiety medicine that helps you to deal with sleep. I think that the tablet Phenothiazines is not an antidepressant. Ask your doctor to prescribe antidepressants like tablet Escitalopram 10 mg or tablet Sertraline 25 mg. I am sure it will help you deal with your anxiety and depression.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
