Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My elderly father, who is 72 years old, has been coughing a lot and feels very weak. We took him to the hospital, and they diagnosed him with HMPV. He has a history of COPD, and I am really scared that this could worsen. Is HMPV dangerous for older adults? What are the chances that he might need hospitalization? Is there any specific treatment for this, or do we just have to wait it out? I am worried because he already has trouble breathing on normal days.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) interaction:
Worsening COPD symptoms: Yes, human metapneumovirus (HMPV) can exacerbate existing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) symptoms, making breathing more difficult.
Increased risk of complications: Older adults with underlying respiratory conditions like COPD are more susceptible to complications related to HMPV.
Managing symptoms:
Monitoring oxygen levels: Continue to monitor your father's oxygen levels, and seek medical attention if they drop below 90 %.
Inhaler adherence: Ensure your father uses his inhalers as prescribed, and consider a spacer device to improve medication delivery.
Additional medications: Steroids or nebulizers may be beneficial in reducing inflammation and improving breathing; consult with his healthcare provider.
Duration of HMPV symptoms in older adults:
Typical duration: HMPV symptoms can last anywhere from 7 to 14 days in older adults but may persist for up to three to four weeks.
Supportive care: Focus on providing supportive care, such as ensuring adequate hydration, nutrition, and rest.
I hope this has helped you.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
