Can HIV worsen with age, and are better meds available?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have known someone having HIV for 10 years. He is a dentist, who contracted it from a wrongful blood injection from another patient. He has been taking his medication since day one, and his condition is stable, with medical analyses showing no signs of the virus. I wanted to ask if is there an age limit for this disease to become more severe and potentially end his life. Is there any medication he should follow rather than Truvada and Tivicay? What else can be done to save his life, maybe traveling to a specific country? Is there any medication that offers full recovery from this?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I appreciate your concern for your friend. Here are some helpful insights based on your questions:

Age limit and progression of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) affect individuals differently, and the progression of the disease can vary depending on various factors such as adherence to medication, overall health, lifestyle choices, and access to healthcare. While age can influence the management of HIV and its related complications, there is no specific age limit that determines the disease's severity or life expectancy. With proper medical care, regular monitoring, and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), many people living with HIV can lead long and healthy lives. HIV medications Truvada (Emtricitabine and Tenofovir disoproxil) and Tivicay (Dolutegravir sodium ) are commonly used antiretroviral medications for the treatment of HIV. These medications effectively suppress the virus, reduce viral load, and improve the immune system's function. Your friend needs to continue taking the prescribed medications as directed by his healthcare provider to maintain viral suppression and overall health.

Additional treatment options depend on your friend's specific medical condition and response to current treatment. His healthcare provider may recommend adjustments to his medication regimen or additional therapies to manage HIV effectively. It is important for him to follow up regularly with his healthcare team for monitoring, evaluations, and to discuss any concerns or new treatment options that may benefit his health. Lifestyle choices and supportive care, along with medication, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate rest, and stress management, can support overall well-being and immune system function.

Your friend should also avoid smoking, limit alcohol consumption, and practice safe sex to prevent the transmission of HIV and other infections. If your friend plans to travel, he must ensure continued access to medical care and medications. He should carry an ample supply of his medications, prescriptions, and relevant medical documentation when traveling to ensure uninterrupted treatment. It is advisable to research healthcare services available at the travel destination and make necessary arrangements in advance.

While there is currently no definitive cure for HIV, advancements in treatment, care, and support have significantly improved the outlook for people living with the virus. Encourage your friend to stay connected with his doctor, stay informed about HIV management, and seek emotional and social support to enhance his quality of life and overall health.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Regards
