How can a 37-year-old prevent HIV from progressing to AIDS?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 37-year-old male. I have an HIV infection and am taking medications. My partner is very worried about my health issue. This infection can spread to kids as well. I would die soon if it progressed to AIDS. How to prevent the progression of HIV to AIDS? Do we have any strong medications or lifestyle changes that might help me in this situation? How to keep myself healthy with this HIV infection? How can I prevent my kids and partner from getting this infection? Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

With proper treatment, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) can be managed well, and the development of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) can be prevented. The main treatment is called antiretroviral therapy (ART). When taken correctly every day, ART lowers the amount of virus in the body (called viral load) to very low or even undetectable levels. This helps people with HIV stay healthy and also means they cannot pass the virus to others, a concept known as U=U (undetectable = untransmittable).

To stay healthy, it is important to take your medications on time, eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and manage stress. Practicing safe sex is also very important. Always use condoms, and if you have a partner who does not have HIV, talk to a doctor about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a medicine that helps prevent HIV infection. Regular visits to your healthcare provider help keep track of your health. Blood tests will check how well the treatment is working.

Getting emotional support from family, friends, or counselors can also make a big difference. Encourage your loved ones to follow healthy habits and take steps to protect themselves. With the right care and lifestyle, people with HIV can live long, healthy lives.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
