What are the potential risks of high triglyceride levels?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had high triglyceride levels ranging from 250 to 500 mg/dL, but my LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels have been very low, around 30 to 45 mg/dL, for the last five years. Could you please help me? What should I do? I swim five days a week for 20 minutes each day. I am currently taking a vitamin B12 tablet and a zinc supplement. I have also attached my laboratory reports.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

We are here to help you. An increase in triglycerides at this level should be treated with Fenofibrate. I recommend reducing your intake of potatoes, rice, and sweets. If you consume alcohol, you should consider quitting. Continue swimming, and in winter, try jogging.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

What is the reason for such low LDL and high triglycerides? Is there any risk associated with this? How can I obtain Fenofibrate? What does having very low LDL mean?

Hi

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Low LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is a positive sign, so there is no need to worry about that. However, high triglycerides are concerning, as they can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Fenofibrate is widely available; it is a prescription medication and should be taken under the guidance of your family physician.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
