My platelet levels keep increasing for the past six months. Is this a sign of cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My total RBC count: 6.14.

Packed cell volume/hematocrit: 51.70.

RDW: 14.1.

Total WBC count: 10200.

Absolute lymphocyte count: 3570.

Absolute eosinophil count: 510.

Platelet count: 477000.

Do I have cancer because my platelet count is been increasing 6 months back it was 416000 and it has increased a lot? I have gone through a lipid profile and CBC to check my body condition and shocked by the increase in platelet count, WBC, and RBC. I am working in night shifts and have high sleep apnea probably 6 hours of sleep or less than that sometimes.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is unlikely to be cancer. This is a gradual increase in platelet which is not expected in cancer. Also, much more increase is expected in cancer. Now this much elevation may be due to worsening sleep apnea or may be lab variation. You may retest it to confirm and three to four weeks. Also, RBC rise is also probably related to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea).

Now you need to focus on the treatment of OSA and weight loss. You should use adequate bipap until you achieve normal weight. Treating OSA may correct these abnormalities.

Also, for lipid abnormalities, you should have healthy lifestyle like avoiding fatty oily and high calorie food. I have light dinner, avoid sweets, nonvegetarian, egg yellow. You need to have regular exercise. So does not appear to be cancer, however, repeat testing after three to four weeks would provide additional assurance. You should focus OSA treatment and weight loss.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

What would be the main cause of increase in high platelet periodically and as suggested will work on high nutrition diet and would be great if you suggest any?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

This is likely related to your OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). Platelets also indicate the level of inflammation in the body which is increased by OSA. So focus on weight loss.

You need to have a calorie-restricted diet, which includes a reduction in sweets, beverages, having light dinner or just salads, plenty of green vegetables and less of meat. Less of fast fried food, more of whole grains product. Other meals like breakfast and lunch should be light as well. Daily activities like brisk walking or running according to your capacity. Avoiding meat or chicken.
