I have been having yellow urine for months. What caused it?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am suffering from yellowish urine from the last three months. I already got treatment for fatty liver and I personally take Liv-52 for my liver issue, but still, the problem has not gone properly. I have also done USG, total bilirubin, LFT, KFT, etc. There is no issue of jaundice but my bilirubin count is high. There is a digestion problem too.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

This is mild unconjugated jaundice. The causes are hemolytic anemia, Gilbert syndrome. There is no harm of these disorders, the liver is fine, no need to take any medication. We just need to confirm the diagnosis. For that, we need to do investigations, a little bit costly but mandatory to be sure about the diagnosis. The investigations that you have to do are:

  1. UGT1A1 mutation (TATA repeat) for Gilbert syndrome.
  2. Peripheral smear examination to look for the evidence of hemolytic anemia.
  3. Later on, we may need to do HB electrophoresis.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Is it natural to get yellowish urine in Gilbert syndrome?

But my urine smells really strong than before. Last time when I did USG, my liver was mildly increased in size. I am afraid. There is a digestion problem too.

Please help.

Thank you.
