How to diagnose bleeding disorders in young females?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 20-year-old female. Yesterday, I accidentally cut my finger while cooking. The blood did not clot at the wound site. It was continuously flowing for more than an hour. I tried using cotton to stop the flow of blood. But it did not stop for more than an hour. After using multiple cotton for more than an hour, it stopped slowly. I did not consult any doctor for this health issue. I googled it and learned that it could be due to hemophilia. I am totally unaware of this condition. What is it? How does it affect individuals? How do we diagnose and treat this condition? Please help me as I am a single child to my father and mother.

Kindly guide.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Blood clotting failure can be caused by many factors, including hemophilia, low platelets, and many other vascular issues.

Did you notice this before, also?

Hemophilia is a hereditary condition that becomes apparent in the first year of life, but sometimes, people have mild hemophilia and are diagnosed later in life.

To confirm the diagnosis, you should take some tests to get your CBC (complete blood count) and coagulation profile done. If you have hemophilia, I think it would be a mild type, as it did not manifest itself till now.

If something becomes abnormal, we can see what factors are deficient and which type of hemophilia you have.

Sometimes platelets are low for some reason, and blood fails to clot.

You do not need to worry much since it seems whatever you have has a milder nature than it did earlier.

Another thing is that females usually do not have hemophilia. This can be von Willebrand disease, which we can confirm after the basic tests.

The rest of the things can be cleared after the test results.

In the future, if you sometimes bleed, apply a pressure bandage and take a transaminase capsule.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
