Can a person on hemodialysis follow a keto diet?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had an accident a couple of years back. I lost significant amounts of my kidney function, and I am up for hemodialysis every 3 weeks. I have been trying every way to improve my overall health without further ruining my kidneys. Something about the benefits of a ketogenic diet caught my eye, but I am not sure if my condition qualifies or is even compatible with trying such a thing. Could you guide me about this?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern regarding the keto diet. So, the problem with the keto diet in dialysis patients is that it is very high in fat and low in carbs, which have the potential to exacerbate metabolic acidosis, which may hasten kidney failure. So, I would advise you to continue with the dialysis diet that you might have been prescribed and not bother about the keto diet. A keto diet may also cause an increased chance of kidney stones and bone diseases.

I hope this helps. Thank you.
