Is heavy bleeding normal after first-time sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had sex for the first time. Afterward, the girl experienced heavy bleeding that lasted for about 30 to 40 minutes. I also noticed thick, blood-like clots in the bleeding.

Now the bleeding has lessened and looks more like a normal period. She is not feeling any pain. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

The bleeding seems to be due to mild trauma or injury to the vaginal wall or hymen during intercourse. This is quite common, especially after first-time sex.

If the bleeding continues or becomes heavy again, it is important to consult a gynecologist in person for a detailed clinical examination and proper treatment.

If the bleeding has already lessened:

  1. Avoid all sexual activities, including masturbation, for a few weeks to allow complete healing.

  2. Stay well-hydrated — drink plenty of water daily.

  3. Gently clean the vaginal area with diluted Savlon (Cetrimide 0.5 % and Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.1 %)antiseptic lotion.

  4. Apply Betadine cream locally, just slightly inside the vaginal opening (be very gentle).

Medications (for three days):

  1. Tablet Pause (Tranexamic acid) 500 mg – 1 tablet twice a day.

  2. Tablet Limcee (Vitamin C) 500 mg – 1 tablet twice a day.

Kindly consult your doctor and take medicines accordingly.

Please follow up with me after three days to let me know how things are going.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
