How can heavy periods be managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 25 years old and have been suffering from PCOD and thyroid issues. My periods have been continuous for two months. I have been suffering for the past 4 years, and my periods last for two to three months with heavy flow. I have not been taking any medication for the past year. Prior to that, I tried homeopathic medicine, and the doctor suggested I take 0.68 ounces (20 ml) of Dashmularishta twice a day, but it did not provide relief.

Kindly help.

Hi,

Thanks for trusting us with your health care.

I can understand your concern.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and thyroid disorders can both affect the menstrual cycle. PCOS is a hormonal disorder that can cause irregular periods, among other symptoms. Thyroid disorders, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, can also lead to changes in the menstrual cycle. Managing these conditions often involves a combination of medication, lifestyle changes, and sometimes hormonal therapies. Your ultrasound confirms PCOD. Your gynecologist may recommend tests, such as hormone level measurements or ultrasound, to better understand your condition. Consider discussing hormone pills with your doctor, as they can help regulate your periods. There are various birth control pills that can help regulate your menstrual cycle. Typically, these are combination pills containing both estrogen and progestin. It is important to consult with a gynecology professional to discuss your specific needs and determine the best option for you. They can provide more information on the potential benefits and risks associated with different types of birth control pills. Together, you and your doctor can develop a treatment plan that suits your needs and helps regulate your menstrual cycle.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
