What to do if a baby's heartbeat is not detected at the eighth week of pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am eight weeks and two days pregnant. But still, no heartbeat of the baby is found.

During five weeks and four days of the scan, the cervix measures 3.4 centimeters, and the G sac measures 0.45 centimeters. The decidual reaction is seen. Internal OS appeared closed.

The doctor advised me to come for a check-up after two weeks. A normal heartbeat of a fetus is present at eight weeks. But our fetus's heart rate is not seen in eight weeks.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your history and report (attachment removed for patient identity protection) and understand your concerns.

As your ultrasound shows, it is a five-week pregnancy; it could be a late conception, and you are five weeks pregnant, not eight weeks pregnant.

  • Get your blood beta hCG (chronic human gonadotropins) level monitored.
  • Are you bleeding?
  • Are you having pain? If not, no need to worry about it. Sometimes, early conception causes these findings.
  • Take a Folic acid tablet and Progesterone to support pregnancy.
  • Repeat ultrasound after two weeks to see fetal cardiac activity.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
