Can the hole in the heart of the fetus heal on its own?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister is six months pregnant. She did 3D sonography, and the doctor told her the baby has a hole in the heart. Can the baby's hole recover independently, or is surgery required?

Kindly help.

Answered by Dr. Archana. G.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. If the baby has only one heart hole, it is better to see if it can be corrected. If it is life-threatening, we can also do it after birth. Kindly do not go for fetal surgery, as it is complicated.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
