What are the medications available to treat Hashimoto's thyroiditis and sinus tachycardia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I was diagnosed with sinus tachycardia after E.coli poisoning 11 years ago. I was not fit to undergo ablation. Medications like beta blockers did not help. My pulse rate is 85 to 120 beats/minute.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I want to know.

  1. Is your condition related to idiopathic sinus tachycardia?
  2. What investigations have been done, and why are you not fit for ablation?

I suggest tablet Ivabradine 10 mg twice daily.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you, doctor, for the reply.

I was diagnosed with inappropriate sinus tachycardia. I am not a candidate for ablation because I only have episodic tachycardia with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

And my average pulse rate during sleep is 95 to 110 beats per minute. I took an ECG and a heart ultrasound scan. Tablet Metoprolol was ineffective.

Kindly assist.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your query.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is suggestive of tachycardia. Are your thyroid levels under control with medications? Take a thyroid test. Tablet Metoprolol is a cardioselective beta blocker, but sometimes in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, you require a non-selective beta blocker like Propranolol.

I suggest (consult with a specialist doctor, talk with him or her, and take medicines with their consent) tablet Propranolol 20 mg twice daily and increase it up to 80 to 100 mg daily, provided your blood pressure remains normal. If tablet Propranolol did not work, try tablet Ivabradine.

I hope it helps.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
