What is the possible reason for excessive hair loss in a 30-year-old female?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 30-year-old female. I am experiencing excessive hair loss. What could be the possible reason for this? What can I do?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

This type of hair loss could be due to female pattern hair loss or telogen effluvium. I need to ask you a few questions. Do you get your periods regularly? Did you fall sick or any illness (5-6 months) before this hair fall started? Do you have any thyroid disease, or anyone in the family has it? Do you notice the widening of your central hair partition? Kindly revert with a photo of the scalp and answers so that I can provide you definitive diagnosis and treatment accordingly.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

My hair fall is still not stopping. I am feeling depressed already, and I keep on thinking about it. What can I do? I used to have thick and strong hair, but now it is thin. Here are the pictures. Please help me.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I went through your photos (attachment removed to protect patient identity), you have lost a lot of hair. This is female pattern hair loss. Female pattern hair loss occurs when gradual thinning of hair and hair fall occurs due to underlying genetic and hormonal components. Do not worry. I will start the treatment and will suggest some investigations. Investigations: Do Thyroid profile, serum ferritin, vitamin D3, anti-mullerian hormone, and serum prolactin. Treatment: Take Hair fact female kit tablets for two months. These are really good multivitamins for hair. Apply Halobetasol lotion 10-12 drops on the scalp at alternate night for three weeks, and Creastim hair lotion 10 sprays daily in the morning in for one month. Kindly follow up in one month.
