Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am suffering from hair loss. I am taking Dutasteride (Avodart) 0.5 mg but want a stronger dosage but cannot find it available anywhere. Can I take one 0.5 mg tablet in the morning and one at night every day to raise my dosage, or is this dangerous?
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thanks for the query.
I can understand your concern. According to your statement, you have been suffering from hair loss.
Avodart contains Dutasteride, which is mainly used for prostatic enlargement. FDA has not approved this drug for the treatment of hair loss, but some physicians prescribe this medication for male pattern baldness. It is three times more potent and effective than Finasteride for the treatment of hair loss. But it will take time to show its full effectiveness. It may take three months for showing any improvement. In some people, it may take even six months to show its full effectiveness. This medication is recommended to take a once-daily dose for 24 months. So, you should not increase its dose because this medication has some side effects. To avoid those unpleasant side effects, it should be taken in a low dose.
You should wait for 3 to 6 months to see the improvement.
Take care. Let me know if I can assist you further.
