How can a breastfeeding woman overcome obesity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My cousin is 35 and became obese after her second baby. Why do women gain weight after having a baby? Is there a specific reason for this? How can she return to her normal weight? Please suggest some dietary and lifestyle changes for a breastfeeding woman to help her lose weight and overcome obesity.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Post-delivery weight gain in women can happen for several reasons. Hormonal changes, like fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone, can slow down metabolism. Women may also be less active due to baby care responsibilities, and breastfeeding can increase appetite, leading to overeating. Additionally, sleep deprivation and emotional factors like stress or postpartum depression can contribute to weight gain, making it harder to manage weight after pregnancy.

To help your cousin lose weight safely, she can follow a balanced diet focusing on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains while reducing processed foods and sugary drinks. Regular exercise, aiming for at least 150 minutes a week of activities like walking or swimming, along with strength training, can boost metabolism. Staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and practicing mindful eating by paying attention to hunger cues can also help. Setting realistic goals for gradual weight loss and seeking support from healthcare professionals can further aid her journey. Encourage her to take small steps, as every little bit counts!

Please let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.

Thank you.
