What causes gum pain and ulcers around wisdom teeth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been having ongoing pain in my gum, near my wisdom teeth. There seems to be something that looks like an ulcer at the place of pain, but it has lasted for over a week. I am not sure if maybe it is something else.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

In response to your complaint, once the wisdom teeth erupt, the soft tissue beneath it becomes trapped between the teeth and causes injury. To go into further detail, You have an upper tooth opposing a lower wisdom tooth, so when these two come into touch with each other, say when eating, soft tissue on the sides of the teeth becomes trapped and hurts.

When this happens repeatedly, the soft tissue is harmed, and an ulcer develops. This may continue for a few days until the lower wisdom tooth settles into its appropriate place and fully erupts. If it aches until then, please use a warm saltwater gargle or a good antiseptic mouth rinse to reduce the discomfort. If the pain and ulcer increase, you must see your dentist to ensure that the wisdom teeth are emerging in the correct direction. In some situations, wisdom teeth, notably lower ones, appear in the wrong order, which can be problematic. In such a scenario, getting an X-ray to confirm it will be necessary.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
