Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 47 and was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My doctor has prescribed me Glimepiride, but I have been feeling fatigued and lightheaded more often since I started taking it.
Is this normal, or should I ask my doctor about adjusting my medication or trying something else, like newer drugs such as GLP-1 receptor agonists or SGLT2 inhibitors? Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I understand your concern.
Glimepiride belongs to a class of drugs called sulfonylureas. These drugs work by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin. While this helps lower blood sugar, it can sometimes cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially in the early stages of treatment.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia include:
It is important to monitor your blood sugar levels closely to see if this might be the cause of your symptoms. If hypoglycemia is occurring, adjusting your Glimepiride dosage or timing with meals might help. Make sure your blood pressure and CBC (complete blood count) levels are normal.
I would like you to share more details, such as:
You should definitely discuss these symptoms with your doctor, as they may want to make changes to your medication regimen.
Alternatively, your doctor may consider newer medications, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists or SGLT2 inhibitors. GLP-1 receptor agonists (for example, Liraglutide and Semaglutide) enhance insulin release in response to food intake and reduce glucagon release, helping control blood sugar without the same risk of hypoglycemia.
They also promote weight loss, which can be beneficial in managing type 2 diabetes. SGLT2 inhibitors (for example, Empagliflozin and Canagliflozin) help the kidneys remove excess glucose through urine and have been shown to improve heart and kidney health in some patients.
I hope this is helpful.
Thank you.
