What should I do after stopping Lansoprazole?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was on Lansoprazole 30 mg for three months. This controlled my symptoms of GERD. Then the doctor reduced the dose to 15mg about four weeks ago. Now I have bad acid reflux, lots of belching, and hot flushes in my chest and back. Burping after all meals - a lot of burping, and my chest is all tight from all this burping. I have now stopped the Lansaprazole 15 mg. What should I do? Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You seem to suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In such cases, I suggest a combination of tablet Rabeprazole and Levosulpiride to my patients, along with lifestyle modifications like regular exercise, yoga, and meditation.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I will try this. Do you think it could be rebound hyperacidity from the medicines? The acid reflux is bad, and I am not even eating much. Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is not rebound hyperacidity. If you look around yourself, you will find that some kind of stress might have occupied you. Stress, poor lifestyle and lack of exercise increase the symptoms. Kindly revert for more queries.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Are hot flushes related to acid reflux?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, it is related to acid reflux. Also, read about irritable bowel syndrome. Stress is linked to acid reflux, hot flashes, and anxiety.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

The doctor put me on Cimetidine. How long should it take this to make my symptoms better? Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Tablet Cimetidine, if effective, will show the effect within ten days. I really doubt it as the tablet Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) while Cimetidine is an H2 blocker. PPI shows better results than H2 blockers. But the result can vary from person to person.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

My healthcare provider sent me for an endoscopy today. Please give an opinion on what I should do next?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I think it is just irritable bowel syndrome. The endoscopy doesn't reveal anything serious. This grade hiatus hernia is commonly seen. Few doctors advise surgery for the same. I would suggest lifestyle changes and tablet Rabeprazole and Levosulpiride.

Patient's Query

Thank you for your reply, doctor.

I will be asking the doctor to prescribe the medicine you said. Is it ok to do gentle weightlifting with a hernia, as I am more than 100 kg in weight and am aiming for weight loss?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, you can do weightlifting. However, people who suffer from inguinal or abdominal hernia are advised not to do weight lifting.

Patient's Query

Thanks you for your reply, doctor.

My doctor advised an ECG (electrocardiogram) because of my hot flashes, and it was fine. My blood pressure was 163/93 mm of Hg when I arrived. And they did it again before I left, and it was 140/90 mm of Hg.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

During an anxiety episode, your blood pressure automatically gets high due to sympathetic stimulation. Therefore, if your blood pressure is normal while you are not anxious, then I would say you do not have blood pressure issues. I would suggest walking, yoga, and meditation.

Patient's Query

Thank you for your reply, doctor.

When I saw a high level, I thought I needed blood pressure medication. But it has been 125/85 mm of Hg on three occasions before.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Most of the diseases like blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol issues are mostly reversible with lifestyle changes.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
