How to manage vaginal skin tags in a sexually active female?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 24-year-old female with a height of 5' 6" feet tall and a weight of 220 pounds. I have PCOS and have gained weight. I have got a few skin tags near my vagina for three months, which are neither itchy nor have any pain. I do not have a history of such tags before, and I am not under any medications. I am worried if it could be a wart. I have been sexually active with the same person for a couple of months; he is healthy and does not have a skin disease. What could be the cause of these tags? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand it. It must be a genital wart (a small bump or a growth in the genitals, which usually resembles a cauliflower), which might spontaneously regress in a few cases. I suggest you apply Imiquimod cream 5 % three times a week every other night for 16 weeks, and Fluorouracil cream 5 % on the tags for three to seven days. Surgical methods such as cauterization (burning the tissue to remove it), an excision (surgical removal) under local anesthesia, cryocautery (freezing the tissue and removing it), or co2 laser can also be done to remove such warts. I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply. I am concerned if the wart could be cured permanently with an ointment, or is there a chance of getting such warts again? Are there any oral medications or precautions I could take to cure and prevent these permanently? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Surgical methods are the better options if you are worried about recurrence (getting it again), which may occur in some cases. Topical treatment will take time to show results, and you do not require any oral medications. Also, please confirm if you have taken the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine such as Gardasil or Cervarix vaccine? I hope this helps.
