Can genital warts recur a few months after treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had my genital warts removed a few months ago. I am attaching the recent pictures. Is it a scar or recurrence of warts? Kindly guide.

Hello,

Welcome to iclinq.com.

I understand your concern and would be happy to help.

I have seen the pictures (attachments removed to protect patient's identity). The lesions look active, so it might be a recurrence. It is not uncommon to have a recurrence of genital warts when removed with cautery or cryotherapy. In the last few years, intralesional immunotherapy with MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine has been tried successfully in treating warts, including genital warts. The advantage of intralesional immunotherapy is that there are no recurrences in a majority of the cases. I suggest you discuss this option with your dermatologist as the procedure is done by a dermatologist only. I hope this helps. Do revert in case of further doubts. Take care.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

There is a dark-colored lesion located near my genital area. It is quite small and difficult to see. I used a magnifying glass to take a picture of it. Could this possibly be a condyloma?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Thank you for sharing the pictures (attachments removed to protect patient's identity). Based on the images you provided, these do not appear to be warts. They more closely resemble simple genital melanotic macules, which are common on the genitals and are harmless. The pictures you previously sent included a few warts, but the current pictures do not show any. These particular spots do not require any treatment and are harmless. If necessary, cautery or laser treatment can be considered.

Thank you for consulting me. You can always come back and reach me at icliniq.com.
