What is gastroenteritis, and are there effective treatments for it?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 30-year-old male experiencing persistent stomach issues. Whenever I eat outside or have a heavy meal, I start vomiting and develop diarrhea, accompanied by severe stomach cramps. After undergoing scans, my doctor diagnosed me with gastroenteritis. Could you please explain this condition to me and clarify if it is treatable?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Gastroenteritis is an infection affecting the stomach and gut. It is commonly seen in individuals with a history of consuming meals outside, reheated dishes, or unhygienic food. The condition is easily treatable with lifestyle adjustments and medications. Lifestyle modifications include avoiding eating out for at least four weeks, steering clear of reheated meals, minimizing alcohol intake (if any), refraining from overeating in one sitting, and transitioning to small, frequent meals. I suggest you introduce probiotics into your diet, either through commercially available probiotic sachets and capsules or daily consumption of yogurt as a natural source of probiotics.

In cases of persistent symptoms or evidence of infection in investigations, a short course of antibiotics may be necessary. While this is a treatable condition, it may recur if dietary habits and precautions are not maintained.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.

Kind regards.
