Does GABA supplements cause sleep disturbances?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) supplement and I am unable to sleep. If I fall asleep, I am only sleeping for a few hours, and then I am waking up. I did not start experiencing this issue until I took the GABA supplement.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com. GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid) supplements can both, make one go to sleep and keep awake. As for now, I suggest you wait for a few hours until the effect of the medicine wears off. I suggest you do not take the GABA supplements by yourself.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I took this supplements only once over a month ago and I am still having these side effects. Why?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. If you had taken the supplement one month back and still having sleep disturbances, please consult a chest physician specializing in sleep disorders. One of the causes of sleep disturbances is obstructive sleep apnea wherein reduced oxygen concentration can wake up the person. Treatment is simple, and it can relieve the symptoms.
