What causes an urge to urinate often despite treated UTI?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am almost 50 years old. I am not diabetic. I had a very bad urinary tract infection. I took three antibiotics to finally clear it. Although I no longer have pain and the infection is gone, I feel the urge to urinate frequently. I feel the need to go constantly. However, there is no pain when I go, and my urine is clear. Is it possible the urinary tract infection caused by inflammation in my bladder is lingering even after the infection is gone, or am I used to the pressure that went on for weeks with the infection that it has become a habit? Can you please help me, doctor?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Prolonged infection can cause inflammation of the bladder, which might take longer to clear. I recommend you have an ultrasound scan for kidneys and bladder to check for any primary cause. I recommend you to repeat another culture after a week also. For frequency symptoms now, I suggest you take (consult with a specialist doctor, talk with him or her, and take medicine with their consent) tablet Mirabegron 50 mg once daily for a month.

Thanks and regards.
