Why do I have periods twice a month?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am on my period for the second time this month. My previous period took eight days, but it is usually five days. What could be the problem?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

This may be due to hormone imbalance, anemia, thyroid problems, or infection due to either urinary tract or pelvic floor response. I suggest you do the following tests:

  1. Urine routine and culture test.
  2. PAP (protected area permit) smear of vaginal discharge for microbiology and others, like cervicitis.
  3. Hb (hemoglobin) level and peripheral smear.
  4. PT (prothrombin) and coagulation profile.
  5. Thyroid profile.
  6. Ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis.

This will narrow down your problem. Treatment would be based on the results of tests. I suggest taking antibiotics, analgesics, and antihistamines along with douching of the vagina with an antiseptic solution and vaginal pessary or ointment for five days. Along with it, an important part is the partner's treatment.

I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
