How to treat lingering symptoms of food poisoning in a 24-year-old male?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 24-year-old male who weighs 52 kg with a height of 5 feet 7 inches. I have sharp abdominal pain, heartburn, and semi-solid stool, and I have the urge to drink water to ease the pain. Also, I sometimes feel nauseated, and my lips are dry throughout the day.

I am not under any medication, and I started having these symptoms three days ago after I had food poisoning. I had a fever, felt weak, and had diarrhea. I do not drink or smoke, and I never had a condition like this in a long time. So what could be the issue?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, it seems more like bacterial diarrhea or food poisoning due to viral infections. It can occur due to,

1. Consumption of infected food, consuming food on an infected plate, and people serving food with infected hands.

2. Eating food without washing your hands.

So I suggest you to follow the instructions mentioned below,

1. Take a complete blood count (CBC) if needed.

2. Take tablets Ofloxacin (antibiotic) 200 mg and Ornidazole (antibiotic) 500 mg twice daily for five days.

3. Take the tablet Ondansetrone (antiemetic) 8 mg twice daily for five days.

4. Take plenty of liquids, and consume liquid or semi-solid foods which are easy to digest.

5. Do not take non-vegetarian food. However, you can take chicken soup, fresh fruit juices, and coconut water.

I hope this has helped you.

Kindly follow up after three days.

Take care.
