Are itchy hives a sign of food allergy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I think I might be having an allergic reaction to something that I ate. I have been experiencing itchy hives since last night, and I do not know what to do. It is the first time this has happened to me, and I feel terrified.

  1. Could it be a food allergy?
  2. How do I figure out what I am allergic to, and what should I do to make the hives disappear?

Yesterday, I had oats for brunch, then later, I had a chicken roll and before going to bed, I had bread with peanut butter. I need to know how to prevent this from happening again.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

From your description, this seems to be a food allergy, specifically an airborne peanut allergy. Different people have different allergies. Recall your diet 24 hours before the onset of allergy, and you will be able to find the triggers. Peanut allergy is usually common, so avoid taking peanut butter for a couple of weeks. For now, I suggest you take the tablet Hydroxyzine (Hydroxyzine hydrochloride) 10 mg or tablet Cetirizine 10mg once daily for five days (these are anti-allergic drugs, and you can use any one of them). In the future, try to avoid food, which can be a potential trigger in your case.

I wish you good health.

Thank you.
