Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Around 15 months ago, I was investigated for muscular pains in my legs, thighs, and inside knees. I visited a neurologist and an orthopedist. I had an EMG, a full neurological examination, an MRI of my head and neck, and blood tests. All investigations came back normal. I visited a rheumatologist who suggested that it could be fibromyalgia after a physical examination and by studying my blood/imaging results. He prescribed me Cymbalta and suggested ways to change my stressful lifestyle and help to reduce my anxiety as I suffer from it. I did not take the medicines, and I tried to reduce the stress by exercising, etc. The pain was moderate, and sometimes I feel sensitivity inside the knees and pain in the upper back, shoulders, and glutes. A couple of times after sleep, I felt my left leg numb, but it only lasted for a few minutes, and I was back to normal. In the summer, the pain was minimal, but at the moment, the pain has returned. When the weather is very cold, my anxiety has hit red. I cry a lot, and I feel depressed as I cannot visit my family due to the COVID-19 situation. The pain is worse, and I got scared yesterday. When I woke up, my left leg was numb, but not the foot, thighs, knee, and calf, and I struggled to get out of bed. I massaged it for a bit and got up but felt better with fatigue. I did have muscular strength. I think as I could walk on my toes and stand on one leg. It just felt as if I applied pressure on my leg during my sleep it became numb. I went to work, and during my shift, I could feel the muscular pain in my thighs and glutes, and the muscles in my neck and shoulders felt so tight and aching. I wanted to ask you if this numbness was from fibromyalgia. And can fibromyalgia cause these sensations? It only happened three to four times last year and again yesterday, and I got scared, in case I fall all of a sudden and I have lost my sleep. I did have an MRI, and it was clear. And last time I had a neurological examination was four months ago, and I was fine. Could you advise me on the matter?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I will like to know if you are on any supplements. Get your blood sugar, Vitamin B12, vitamin D, and serum magnesium, zinc levels, thyroid function test, and kidney function test done. How are your digestion and bowel patterns? What measures are you taking for stress management? How is your menstrual history? What are your eating patterns and dominant foods in your diet? Try to follow a paleolithic diet. Practice intermittent fasting 16:8. Check your sleep patterns if any difficulty in initiating sleep, maybe some Melatonin supplements if any problem. Have moderate-intensity exercises or a walk for two miles a day. Practice some tai chi and mindfulness, listen to music, and meditation audios may be Eckhart Tolle. Take magnesium supplements as per the blood levels, probiotics, decrease bad carbohydrates from the diet, and maintain a daily diary for your mood patterns, emotions, and aggravating and relieving factors for the pain.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am not on any supplements. Thyroid and kidney blood tests are normal. I have not checked B12, Zinc, and Magnesium recently. So I could not comment on these. Digestion and bowel habits seem normal. The contraceptive pill controls menstrual cycles. Sleep pattern is not interrupted. However, recently I feel tired all the time, even after long hours of sleep. My diet is awful, with many carbs and no exercise due to lack of spare time. I forgot to mention that I had an MRI of the thoracic spine and the finding was a small herniated disc. I wonder if this has to do with the numbness too? I will try to start a healthier diet and go for walks. I will also check my Mg levels. I will try to do some of the activities you suggested. I do not know how to relax and reduce my anxiety. It seems impossible. I have panic attacks and the worries about my health are constant. Do the symptoms I described suggest fibromyalgia, in your opinion?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Yes, it could be fibromyalgia, but the root cause of your problem is your lifestyle. Stop carbs and get a stool test done to look for any yeast. Take a lot of veggies and fruits. Take some multivitamin supplements with magnesium, maybe 150 mg, Vitamin B6, B12, zinc 22 mg, Vitamin D 1000 IU. Also, get your cortisol levels checked. Thoracic spine finding is not related to the problem. Rest, follow your diet and physical activity advice. Maintain your diary, and we will connect again after one week with your inputs.
