Do uterine fibroids resolve by medications in a 39-year-old female?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 39-year-old aunt got recently diagnosed with uterine fibroids. She has two to three fibroids and the size ranges between 3 to 4 cm. She gets pain in her abdominal region and at times her stomach looks bloated. The doctor gave her a few medications for this. Will the fibroids completely resolve with medications? She is scared that this might turn abnormal one day. What are all the necessary steps she should take to resolve the fibroids soon?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query and understand your concern.

We cannot say that the fibroid gets completely resolved but yes with medications the symptoms will get relieved like excessive bleeding and pain. The size of the fibroid is not very big so it is better to manage conservatively either with hormonal pills or IUD (intrauterine device) called Mirena. I am in favor of Mirena, as you do not have to take daily medicine, and its action is much better. She should do an ultrasound (USG) scan every three to six months to see whether the size is increasing or not. I hope this information helps you, feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
