Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am diagnosed with a fatty liver, steatosis stage 3 but am a bit puzzled by my latest results. Although my fibro scan results show significant improvement my liver function test AST and ALT have deteriorated. ALP again improved. Can you explain this to me, please?
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis of fatty liver, but I am here to help explain your latest results. It is important to understand that liver function tests, such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) are not direct measures of liver fat content or the severity of fatty liver disease. These tests evaluate the level of liver enzymes in our blood, which can b elevated in a number of conditions including liver damage, inflammation, and infection. Fibro scan, on the other hand, is a non-invasive test that measures the stiffness of your liver, which can be an indirect way of assessing liver fibrosis or scarring. It's possible that your fibro scan results have improved because your liver has become less stiff, indicating less scarring, even if your liver enzyme levels have not improved. It is also important to note that liver enzyme levels can fluctuate over time and may not always correlate with the severity of the liver disease. However, if your liver enzymes continue to rise or if you experience other symptoms such as abdominal pain or yellowing of the skin and eyes, then further workup may be needed
Regards.
