Are tongue fasciculations harmless?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby is 5 months old and seems to have tongue fasciculation so it is difficult to feed him. But the baby plays with his hands, legs and does not seem to have a motor problem.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I really feel your concern as a parent. Reflux in babies is not unusual, however, you say that your baby has trouble sucking milk as well. Unfortunately, tongue fasciculation is not regarded as a normal feature. So, I am sorry that I cannot reassure you that there is no problem. You need to check your baby's blood for SMA genes because this kind of motor neuron disorder has approved treatment nowadays. Moreover, screening blood tests for metabolic diseases and some deficiencies like B12 are necessary. Please consult with a pediatric neurologist in your area for these aims.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
