Patient's Query
Hello,
I have high myopia and just had a complete eye examination two days ago, and everything was fine. I am reaching out because I drank a sip of caffeinated tea. Can this cause any eye issues or raise my eye pressure? Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
To answer your question, a single sip of a caffeinated drink will not elevate your eye pressure. So you need not get perturbed about it, especially if your intraocular pressure is normal. Caffeine, when consumed in large amounts, has been thought to increase the aqueous production in the eye, which can increase eye pressure in people whose aqueous drainage is compromised. But this is unlikely to occur in normal eyes with normal trabecular meshwork. I do not think you need to worry about it, even if you were prone to develop glaucoma if you only had a sip. I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to reply if you have any further queries. Regards.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
Is caffeine potentially only a concern when consumed in large amounts or every day for a long period? I do not drink coffee or caffeinated beverages.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Yes indeed. You can go ahead and have your regular cup. Do not exceed more than two a day. And if you do not have glaucoma, you can have more if you feel inclined to. I hope this answers your query. Regards.
