Are eye floaters and partial retinal detachment rare and serious conditions?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 46 years old and have had eye floaters for more than 15 years. I noticed two small ones in my right eye as well. Nothing bothers me, but my eyes burn continuously, and water comes out of my eyes. I do not have any blurry vision, curtain effects on the eyes, loss of peripheral vision, or flashes. The lens crafters told me I needed glasses and that my eyes would be fine. Today my doctor said my retina looks healthy, but I should consult an eye doctor. Should I make an emergency appointment for eye floaters? Is partial retinal detachment a rare condition?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Eye floaters are not always an emergency. In your case, you have a few floaters but no flashes of light and curtain effect, so I suggest you wait till your appointment. If you feel they are increasing or associated with flashes, visit the emergency room. Also, the chances of partial retinal detachment in your case are low.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

My doctor looked into my eye today and said that it looks healthy. Will my doctor be able to see a partial detachment by looking into my eye today?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The doctor could detect partial detachment by doing a retinal examination. She must have suggested an eye examination for your refractive errors. It is always better to undergo dilated examination by visiting an ophthalmologist. I request you to attach the images of the prescription.
