How to cure asthma exacerbations when you move to the city?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My asthma has been out of control since moving to the city. I use my inhaler six times a night but still can not breathe properly. My chest is tight, and I wheeze even when sitting still. I have missed two weeks of work, and my boss is upset. The emergency inhaler barely helps now, even after four to five puffs. I tried a humidifier, but I woke up gasping.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your asthma is dangerously uncontrolled, with frequent symptoms and reduced peak flow (200), which is a medical emergency. Persistent wheezing, chest tightness, and excessive inhaler use indicate a severe exacerbation requiring urgent medical attention. Consult a pulmonologist immediately for a proper treatment plan, which may include systemic steroids and a long-acting bronchodilator with an inhaled corticosteroid.

Environmental triggers like mold, cat dander, and urban air pollution are worsening your condition. Try sealing vents, using HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters, and dehumidifying your home. Avoid strong odors, dust, and allergens. Keep using your rescue inhaler as needed, but do not rely on it alone. Ensure proper inhaler technique and consider allergen immunotherapy if triggers are confirmed. Take time off work to focus on recovery; asthma flare-ups can worsen without early intervention. Seek urgent care if symptoms escalate further.

Please let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.

Thank you.
