Can Sertraline cause bluish discoloration of the eye?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I noticed blue discoloration in the corner of my right eye. I am currently taking tablet Sertraline. Is there any link between the drug and discoloration? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It can be due to a thining of sclera, prominent veins, or drug-induced pigmentation. It will be more apparent if you share a picture of it. Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

Could the antidepressant be the possible cause? Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is quiet unlikely. Sertaline can cause mild blurring of vision, dryness, and changes in intra ocular pressure. But discoloration has not been noted as one of the side effect. Kindly share an image of your eye. Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I have attached a picture of my eye. Does it look like thininng of the sclera or pigmentation? Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

This is episcleritis (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity). I suggest you start using a topical steroid. The redness is also because of episcleritis. The blue color is due to the uveal tissue vessels underneath. Do not worry. Take care.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

Is the blue color due to thinning? Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No, it is not due to thinning. Scleral thinning will be very painful that you cannot open your eyes. Thanks.
