Is the morning-after pill effective even during ovulation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had unprotected sex yesterday and he pulled out of me. When we finished, I looked at my period tracker app and noticed that my period should come in four days and that I was ovulating. I took the morning-after pill immediately afterward. Will the pill work? What are the chances of me getting pregnant? I am going out of my mind. Please help me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

  • If you have taken the pill before 72 hours have passed after the act, you are safe.
  • Please do not worry. You are not pregnant.
  • Also now, your periods will postpone by up to 10 days for two cycles.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Sorry, my period is due in 14 days, not four. But, is the morning-after pill effective since I am most fertile? And, will I get a normal period in 14 days meaning for sure I am not pregnant?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

  • You are safe. There is nothing to worry.
  • Because of the pill, your next period will get postponed by a week to 10 days. So, now it will not come after 14 days, but after 20 days.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

So, for sure, I am safe from pregnancy. Is that right? Will I just have a late period?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

  • Yes, exactly.
  • Also, just to be sure, take a urine pregnancy test 30 days from the act.

Thank you.

Alright, I will take a pregnancy test in a month. But I am definitely not pregnant. Is that right? Is the morning-after pill still effective when I am most fertile?
