Could sexual intercourse after using cocaine affect a baby?

Hello doctor,

I had a big night with lots of alcohol and several lines of cocaine. My wife and I had sex the next day which has resulted in a pregnancy. We are both happy with the news but are concerned about any risks associated with the effects of the cocaine on my sperm (potential abnormalities for the child, etc). Should we be worried about this? I am otherwise very healthy (good diet, daily exercise). I do not drink that often and the cocaine use was a one-time thing.

Please help.

The one-time cocaine use will not affect the present pregnancy as a lot of sperm that fertilized the ovum was manufactured three months back when you were not exposed to cocaine, so unlikely that the present would have undergone any morphological or DNA changes. Nevertheless, medical follow-up with NT (nuchal translucency) scan, triple and quadruple marker tests, and level 2 anomaly scan would be imperative during the course of pregnancy.
