What distinguishes ectopic pregnancy from menstruation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a few questions to help me understand the difference between ectopic pregnancy and menstruation. I read that ectopic pregnancy bleeding can sometimes be heavy and have clots similar to a period.

  1. Does ectopic bleeding usually come and go, or is it continuous?
  2. Also, does menstrual bleeding typically not continue beyond seven days?
  3. Lastly, if someone experiences breast tenderness without nausea, could that be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, or is it more likely related to menstruation?

Kindly explain.

Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out with iCliniq. I am very sorry about your medical condition.

Dont worry, I am here to take care of you. Regarding your questions about the difference between menstruation and ectopic pregnancy,

Menstruation is the normal cyclical bleeding that occurs when there is no pregnancy. In contrast, an ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube.

Ectopic pregnancy bleeding is not cyclical and does not come and go like a period. It is often continuous, may be accompanied by severe lower abdominal or pelvic pain, and can sometimes lead to dizziness or fainting if internal bleeding occurs, making it a medical emergency.

Menstrual bleeding typically lasts five to seven days and then stops. Breast tenderness can occur in both conditions, but when associated with nausea, pain, or delayed periods, it may suggest pregnancy rather than normal menstruation.

I will schedule another appointment for follow up via chat , phone or video consultation. Thanks for using icliniq and have a nice day.
