Why do I have pain, wetness in my ear, and muffled hearing?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For the past three days, I have had pain in both my ears, especially the outer ear. Also, I had wetness inside the ear and swelling around the ear; therefore, my hearing was muffled. I had been taking Tablet Augmentin, but they it does not seem to work for me. Kindly suggest some other medicine.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I would like to know: 1. Do you have any discharge from the ear? 2. Did you use any ear drops? 3. Is there any previous history of the same complaints? Kindly revert for further queries. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

There was no discharge from the ear, but I could hear the sound of water in my ear when I tilted my head or pressed the ear. I also had this problem four months back, for which I used homeopathic ear drops. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I think you have chronic otitis media, a condition with a hole in the eardrum. When exposed to cold weather or if water enters your ear, the middle ear gets infected and starts producing watery discharge. I would suggest the following medicines: 1. Tablet Ciprofloxacin 500 mg twice daily after food. 2. Tablet Aceclofenac with Serratiopeptidase twice daily after food. 3. Tablet Pantoprazole 40 mg once in the morning before food. 4. Tablet Levocetirizine once in the night after food. 5. Antibiotic ear drop with steroid thrice daily. 6. Take steam inhalation twice daily. 7. Plug your ear with cotton soaked in petroleum jelly or coconut oil whenever you take a bath. Kindly revert for more queries. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply. Can you send me a prescription for these medicines?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Suppose you frequently have this issue without any discharge. In that case, it could be otitis media due to eustachian tube dysfunction, where fluid collects behind your eardrum, and you experience pain with decreased hearing. For this condition, I would suggest: 1. Steam inhalation with the drugs mentioned above. 2. Nasal Xylometazoline drops three drops in both the nostrils daily. 3. Valsalva maneuver. If the condition persists, I suggest you consult an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgeon and advise for an impedance audiogram. If the fluid is behind the eardrum, you will need ventilation or grommet tube insertion into your eardrum. We cannot provide you with a prescription. Thank you.
