What can be done to relieve an ear pain following a cold and cough?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My son had a cold and cough with thick phlegm and mucus from the nose and throat. Also, the phlegm is trapped in the right ear, which causes pain in the right ear and jaw.

What medicine can be given to drain the mucus from the ear to relieve pain?

Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

It is an upper respiratory infection, so I would suggest the following medicines:

  1. Tablet Zifi CV (Cefixime and Ofloxacin) 200 mg twice daily for five days.
  2. Tablet Cheston cold total (Ambroxol, Levocetirizine, Paracetamol or Acetaminophen, and Phenylephrine) twice a day for five days.
  3. Syrup Cuflift LS (Levosalbutamol, Ambroxol, and Guaifenesin) one teaspoon thrice daily for three days.
  4. Ask him to consume hot water and also do a hot water gargle.

I would also suggest a complete blood count test (CBC) and ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate).

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
