How to treat itchy scalp and hair loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 36-year-old female suffering from itchy scalp and hair loss. My scalp itches mainly where I tie my hair but a little at the back. It is too itchy and has caused bruises everywhere. In the front, I have thinning hair. My hair gets oily very soon. Please suggest how to stop itching and reduce hair loss.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Itching in the scalp can be due to a lot of causes. The more common cause is dry skin, which keeps coming off as dandruff. It can be due to a lack of adequate protein in your diet. So I suggest you improve your diet and add boiled eggs and lean meat to your diet daily. You also need to use medicated shampoo (containing Aloe vera); they are available with the pharmacist. Make sure you bathe with lukewarm water; extremes of temperature can damage your hair further. Use the medicated shampoo once in two days. You also need to use hair oil once every two to three days, preferably something which has coconut oil. One thing that is supposed to be helpful is the application of sour curd on the hair before bathing; even though it has not been approved, dermatologists have found some benefits of doing this to help hair growth and reduce hair fall. Most importantly, make sure you have adequate protein in your diet. You need to be patient, and if you follow the guidelines, you can expect better results within eight weeks. I hope this helps. Thank you.
