Can fever medicine cause dry mouth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a female, 24 years old. I had a slight fever past month, so I went to a pharmacist, he gave me two doses of Nimesulide Paracetamol tablets and some quick relief tablet (having Chlorpheniramine, Phynelpherine, Hydrochloric and Guaiphenesin salt). My fever went away, but I had a dry mouth, which I did not pay attention to. Meanwhile, I had a lot of peanut butter and dry fruits. And a week later I had 2 to 3 ulcers in my mouth, when I checked, I found brown-darkbrown marks inside my cheeks. I went to see a general physician, he said it is a side effect of the medicine and it will go away in some time. But now one month has passed. The marks are comparatively light. And mouth gets dry occasionally only. But I feel (because of dry mouth or spicy food maybe) the lining of cheeks gets damaged which again creates a problem. I want to know, how much time will it take to heal properly. And should I avoid some particular food items? The doctor I went to only gave me probiotics for five days.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As such it is not serious but I will tell you there can be some factors responsible for it like drugs Chlorpheniramine which you have taken. Anxiety can cause dryness in the mouth and ulcers are commonly observed in stressed patients particularly females of age group 20 to 30. Morever patient can be diabetic. Now assess yourself if you feel any of these. But so for drugs are concerned it must go after two weeks. Youdo not need to worry. But if you are worried, stressed, then relax. Otherwise, you will feel like that always.
