Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I was reading on the internet that one should not take pomegranate juice while on Rosuvastatin. It damages the kidney and muscle loss will occur. Please advice.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com. After reviewing all the provided information, there appears to be no direct contraindication between pomegranate juice and statin medication; therefore, it's not absolutely prohibited. However, it's worth noting that consuming pomegranate juice while taking statins could potentially slow down the metabolism of the statin, leading to an increase in both its effects and potential side effects. Common side effects of statins encompass fatigue, muscle pain, and the risk of liver injury. To err on the side of caution, it's advisable for individuals on statins to avoid drinking not only pomegranate juice but also grape juice, as these interactions are still being studied. Although this theory has been demonstrated in rat studies, definitive evidence in humans is lacking at this time.
