Can Doxycycline completely cure vaginal infections?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been diagnosed with ureaplasma and I took tablet Doxycycline for a week. A year ago I took tablet Azithromycin twice for the same condition. Is it supposed to go away right after a week or do I have to wait? Also, what if I have unprotected sex with my boyfriend and he is negative? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Tablet Doxycycline is a good antibiotic and if taken for the whole course gives you protection from various vaginal infections. As you are feeling relieved from the symptoms that means the drug has acted well and you will get protection even if you have had unprotected sex even during the treatment because after two or three doses the drug goes into the blood circulation and it shows its effect right after that. Sometimes you may not get completely cured and go into the subclinical stage, so one cannot be sure that relapse may not occur but if all of your symptoms have subsided and you have taken the whole course there is no need to worry further.

I hope your queries are resolved and any further queries are welcome.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you doctor for the reply,

Should I worry if I get cured but my boyfriend negative?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Once you have taken the whole treatment and your symptoms are cured there is no need to worry. If your boyfriend comes out negative then no further action is required. I would like to advise you to take certain antiseptic precautions such as -

1. Clean your private parts with Dettol (antiseptic lotion) diluted in water after every urination.

2. Avoid vaginal douches.

3. Try to wear cotton panties.

I hope your queries are resolved and any further queries are welcome.
