How to manage posterior left paracentral and lateral herniation of C6-7 disc with nerve compression?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been diagnosed with a posterior left paracentral and lateral herniation of the C6-7 disc. This condition is causing compression on the anterior subarachnoid space and the left C7 nerve root. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

You need to try reducing the pain with some precautions and medicines.

Instructions for neck pain:

  1. Avoid lifting heavy weights.

  2. Avoid arching your back; instead, bend your knees to pick up something from the floor.

  3. Avoid sitting for long hours.

  4. Avoid riding on two-wheelers.

  5. Improve your posture while sitting; try to sit up with your back straight.

  6. Take a quick walk every 20 minutes while working, and always sit on a chair with back support.

  7. Do not get up suddenly from a sleeping position; turn to the side and then get up.

  8. Take bed rest only if the pain is severe.

  9. Apply hot fomentations locally over the affected area at least twice daily.

  10. Apply Oxalgin gel (diclofenac) locally for pain relief, twice daily.

I suggest you take the following medications:

  1. Tablet Pregabalin 75 mg for 15 days before food at 7 p.m every day.

  2. Tablet Etoricoxib 60 mg for 10 days after food.

  3. Tablet Rabeprazole 20 mg for 10 days before food.

  4. Tablet Shelcal CT (Calcium carbonate, vitamin D3,) for 30 days before food.

  5. Tablet Cholecalciferol (D-Shine) 60 K once daily for 10 days, then once a month for 11 months.

Take these tablets only if you are not allergic to them, and avoid them if you are a known case of bronchial asthma. Do physiotherapy exercises like neck rotations, shoulder shrugs, and shoulder rotations under the guidance of a physiotherapist. Core strengthening exercises can also be done once the pain reduces. Jogging, running, and weight-lifting may aggravate back problems.
